From apang@eb.com Thu Sep 11 13:17:26 1997 Date: Wed, 11 Jun 97 13:48:32 PDT From: Alex Pang To: conference@h-net.msu.edu Subject: Conference paper proposal I would like to submit the following proposal for a paper at the conference "Envisioning the Future: Creating the History 'Classroom' of the 21st Century." I know the deadline for submissions was June 10, but hope this can still be considered, probably for inclusion in the session on "The Future of Publishing." Many thanks, Alex Pang "The Present of the Publisher in the Age of Electronic Reproduction". Much has been written on the theoretical impact electronic publishing will have on institutions that produce and communicate knowledge; far less has been said about how publishers are managing this revolutionary transition, and what is actually involved in the shift from print to electronic publishing. The speaker, the Deputy Editor of the _Encyclopaedia Britannica_ in charge of content development, has been working on the ground floor of the revolution. The paper will discuss how the challenges of creating electronic content differ from print, how legal and technical issues affect the development and distribution of electronic content, and how the evolving relationship between electronic publishers and readers may shape the future of electronic content. ------------------------------------- Dr. Alex Soojung-Kim Pang Deputy Editor, Encyclopaedia Britannica 310 S.
