From leeann.potter@arch1.nara.gov Thu Sep 11 10:56:06 1997 Date: Mon, 02 Jun 1997 11:05:26 -0400 From: Lee Ann Potter To: melanie@h-net.msu.edu Subject: Re: conference proposal -Reply Melanie, I am sorry the proposal did not come through as an attachment. We are trying to figure out why this sometimes happens. Can you tell me what kind of a system you are on? Maybe knowing this will help our system administrator fix our problem. Thanks. Lee Ann Here is the proposal: Envisioning the Future: Creating the History ?Classroom? of the 21st Century PROPOSAL FOR DEMONSTRATION / WORKSHOP The National Archives and Records Administration: Connecting 21st Century Classrooms to the Records of Our Nation Conducted by Rick Blondo and Lee Ann Potter of the National Archives and Records Administration The National Archives of the United States is an inexhaustible resource for educators and students. The original records that document federal government activities and the national experience have been available for decades at National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) facilities nationwide. Now, with the advent of the Internet, more and more high interest documents are available in digital facsimile format through the National Archives Web site. Information about National Archives holdings and facilities is also available online. This two-part presentation (one-hour per part) will introduce educators to the vast array of resources administered by the National Archives, the steps being taken to make many of these resources available for classroom use via the Internet, and techniques for using NARA?s primary sources in the classroom. More than twenty years ago, the National Archives pioneered a program for teaching and learning with primary sources that recognized that documents?not simply transcripts?are powerful tools for bringing history to life for those who know how to use them. This presentation begins with archivist Rick Blondo?s general introduction to the National Archives and the resources?both traditional and online?available for use by educators and students. He will demonstrate many essential elements of the National Archives Web site, including NAIL (NARA Archival Information Locator), Online Exhibit Hall, The Digital Classroom, the Presidential Libraries, and others. The session will continue with education specialist Lee Ann Potter?s demonstration of how these resources may be used as educational tools. Participants will explore ways to teach historical content and refine document analysis skills using digitized images of textual records, maps, and photographs; sound recordings; motion pictures; online resource guides; and searchable databases on the NARA Web site. Participants will also learn about future plans for the site. Potter will use primary sources to demonstrate engaging, active-learning methods for teaching the five types of historical thinking identified in the National Standards for History. These include: chronological thinking, historical comprehension, analysis and interpretation, research skills, and decision making. The handouts given to participants will have been downloaded from the NARA?s site and photocopied, modeling what participants can easily do for their own students. In addition, participants will learn how to download archival materials into authoring programs, direct student usage, and create links from their sites to National Archives? resources. Opportunities for cooperation between humanities faculty and archival institutions will also be examined, such as joint preparation of students for archival research and collaboration on the development of educational materials, including faculty input into the types of teaching materials needed and evaluation of materials created by archives. The session will enable participants to find online archival information and primary sources and use them immediately to teach historical content and skills to their own students. The presenters will emphasize that online resources are tools which make it possible to build quality teaching and learning experiences, but tools that are most effective when used in conjunction with other proven teaching methods. Biographical Statements for National Archives Presenters Rick Blondo and Lee Ann Potter Rick Blondo has worked for the National Archives and Records Administration since 1990 as an appraisal archivist, education specialist, and, at present, consultant archivist in the User Services Branch at the National Archives at College Park, MD. He holds master?s degrees in history and library science from the University of Maryland and a B.A. degree in religion from Southern Adventist University. Prior to his National Archives? service, he worked at the Maryland State Archives for 8 years as a staff reference archivist, publications program director, internship program coordinator, and education outreach director. Lee Ann Potter is an education specialist in the Educational and Museum Programs Division of the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. She develops educational materials and publications based on archival documents for a variety of audiences and conducts a wide range of courses on teaching with documents. Prior to her employment with NARA, she worked for the Smithsonian Institution, coordinating a national teleconference on museum/school partnerships. For six years, she taught U.S. history and world geography at Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas. She earned her B.A. degree in history from the University of Colorado and her M.A. degree in history from the University of Houston. >>> Melanie Shell 06/02/97 10:35am >>> Dear Lee Ann Potter, I am afraid that the proposal did not come through to my e-mail system as an attachment, but rather as some sort of encoded text (see below).
