I have sent my registration and check by snail mail. Below is the information you requested. I look forward to the conference. Carol Toner. Information for "Envisioning the Future" Conference Panel: "The Virtual History Classroom: Distance Education in the 21st Century" Carol Toner, Research Associate and Assistant Professor, History, University of Maine (other panel members to be announced by conference planning committee) Paper title: "Women and Work: An Upper Level History Class on ITV and the Web" I teach working-class history, women's history, and women's studies at the University of Maine. I have taught a number of classes on interactive television and compressed video (two-way video). Because most distance students do not have access to research libraries, I am putting two ITV courses on the Web this fall so that students will have easier access to primary and secondary sources. I am currently thinking about ways to help students evaluate the many types of sources they will find on the Internet. As historians we teach our students to recognize the usefulness and limitations of various primary and secondary sources. Should we treat Internet sources any differently? What distinct problems occur with Internet sources? Will the Internet merely confuse students? Or is the Internet an opportunity for students to appreciate the importance of evaluating sources? I look forward to discussing this issue and many others at the upcoming "Envisioning the Future" conference.
