The University of Cape Town seeks an outstanding academic to lead the Department of Social Anthropology, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments in South Africa.  Established in 1922, it has been the home to many distinguished scholars.  

The incumbent will be expected to take on the headship of the Department, for the next three years at least, and provide intellectual leadership, locating the work of the Department within a South African context, the African continent and globally.  Appointment will be as soon as possible.

The Department has a strong record of teaching and research in Social-cultural Anthropology with a political-economic emphasis, focusing particularly but not exclusively on Southern Africa.  Our present expertise is in medical anthropology, the anthropology of development, migration, ethnicity, identity, diaspora, gender and sexuality, violence and social justice, memory and narrative, and the anthropology of knowledge.

Although this is a multidisciplinary search (Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology), the department hopes that one of the positions will be filled by a historian, in which case the appointment would be in both African American Studies and the Department of History. Duties: Leadership and overall management responsibility for programming, fundraising, board relations, finances, staffing, and external relationships.  

Qualifications:  Applicants must be committed to inquiry or student-based history education.  Demonstrated fundraising and management experience and skills are essential, along with familiarity with the nonprofit environment.  Graduate level training in history, history education, or an allied field is preferred.  Familiarity with the challenges and needs of urban school teachers, working with a wide diversity of students and schools is highly desirable.  Candidates should be able to develop and implement community-based educational programs, organize and manage a small but complex institution, collaborate with a broad range of other organizations and academic and public constituencies.
