The economic history department at the London School of
Economics has a temporary position for 1 year beginning 1st
October 1995 in the field of Early Modern European economic
history at assistant professor ("lecturer") level. The job
opening is a temporary replacement for Dr. S. Epstein, and
might suit someone wanting to spend one year in Europe, or a
just completing PhD student in the field.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach two
courses (usually 20-24 weeks over three semesters, followed
by an examination period). One course is a graduate
(Masters) level course entitled "The Origins of the World
Economy, 1450-1750", which examines the comparative economic
development of Britain and Western Europe, Asia and Africa
from the late middle ages to the mid-eighteenth century.
The second course is an undergraduate level course entitled
"Towns, Society and Economy in Britain and Europe,
1450-1750". This examines the economic and social history
of European towns in the period and the relation between
urban growth and economic development.
The economic history department at LSE currently consists of
a permanent faculty of 13 with several additional
researchers working on specific research projects. The
department teaches three undergraduate specialist degrees, a
tuaght masters level programme with about 40 students per
year, and around 40 graduate research students.
