Electronic maps of 18th century England have been a concern of mine for some
time. I originally bought a copy of the CD Rom WorldAtlas, but was very
disappointed with the detail. Then I saw on a magazine CD Rom cover from
Britain a programme called Autoroute Express. The sample of this was
fascinating, for although intended for the planning of journeys, it enabled
you to select which villages and roads you wanted to include, down to every
country lane. However the price was shockingly high. - about 500 pounds as I
recall. I have recently purchased Global Explorer, and am very pleased at
the level of detail for the whole world, and the parts of Britain that I
want to display although it is very much a contemporary Atlas and
unfortunately when you clip and paste it, the only way to clip is to include
the route numbers. But I think one must recognise that cartographers have a
copyright over their works, and one could not reproduce any map without
permission.
