Susan Amussen referred to the paradigm or construct of 'respectability' in the
context of John Langbein's critique. I'm not sure that I fully understand
'respectability', but I would like to hear other people's perceptions in more
detail, since it has become a corner which is being fought by some historians
-- notably Michael (F.M.L. Thompson) as well as by, I believe, Caroline Conley
in her monograph on the dispensation of justice in Kent and (?) by Gertrude
Himmelfarb. What do people think?
