Heroes of The Second Nayriz Revolt

By:  Ahang Rabbani

In the Spring-Summer of 1852, the Babis of Nayriz launched a second organized and massive revolt against the combined forces of national and provincial military. In the process, however, many hundreds of them perished in the battles fought with the army, tribal and irregular forces arrayed to suppress their uprising or died in the general massacre of the Babi men at conclusion of the war.

The following list of the Babi martyrs during the course of this revolt was assembled from the eyewitness narrative of Mulla Muhammad Shafi`, Fadil Mazandarani’s Tarikh Zuhuru’l-Haqq[1], and Muhammad Shaif`-Ruhani’s Lam`atu’l-Anvar[2]. As elaborated in my forthcoming book on this subject, with near certainty, the list in the Zuhuru’l-Haqq reflects the text of the unpublished history of Nabil Zarandi. Also, from the specifics information (and errors) in the text, it is clear that the Lam`atu’l-Anvar was relying exclusively on the information provided by Zuhuru’l-Haqq vol 4 and not on the narrative of Mulla Shafi`.

To facilitate future research, the sequence number in each source is provided against each name, (e.g., “`Abdu’llah, son of `Ali” is the 101st name in the narrative of Mulla Shafi`, and 109th name in Zuhuru’l-Haqq and Lam`atu’l-Anvar).
