Some local sources you might consider are:
1. Legg, James B. The Best Ever Occupied: Archaeological Investigation of
a Civil Warn Encampment on Folly Island, South Carolina: S.C. Institute of
Archaeology and Anthropology, 1989
2. Smith, Steven D. Whom we would never more see: history and
archaeology recover the lives and deaths of African American Civil War
Soldiers on Folly Island. South Carolina Department of Archives and
History, 1993.
3. Hagy, James W. To Take Charleston: The Civil War on Folly Island.
Charleston: Pictorial Histories Publishing Co, 1993.
4. Wise, Stephen, [not exact title} Gate of Hell: The Charleston Campaign
of 1863. Univ. of S. C. Press, 1994.
Folly Island was used as the base for taking Charleston. It is just south
of Morris Island where the fighting occurred. The sources by Legg and Smith
deal mostly with African American troops, especially the 55th Mass. My
book deals with all the union forces on Folly and has some good information
on the blacks. I have not yet gotten Steve's book, but I suspect it is an
excellent source. I live on Folly Island. I consider the film to be quite
good. There were a few scenes where I could tell they had used Civil War photog
raphs as their starting point.
