Can anyone help me with a citation to settle a matter which I'm debating
with a colleague.

In two reputable books ( the Historical Times Illustrated Dictionary and in
Gary
Gallagher's _Antietam : essays on the 1862 Maryland Campaign_) it is
explicitly stated that R E Lee found out almost immediately that McClellan
had found the Lost Order and was exploiting this discovery.

My colleague refers to D S Freeman's _R E Lee_ which states that Lee didn't
know about the Lost Order until after McClellan had published his report of
the battle several months later.

I suspect that since Freeman published his massive work, further research
has discovered some material to substantiate the claim in the Dictionary and
Gallagher's book, and I'd be grateful if anyone could point me at it.

Many thanks

Kerry
