Lou Athey commented in re the movie "Glory"
Was the message of the movie not also an indictment of the insanity of
sending mass attacks against a fortified foe, a message that was sent so
often during the Civil War that one must wonder why it had to be learned
again and again and again.
In answer to the question, I would have to say no, I don't think so. The
movie, although powerfully and realistically depicting the carnage involved in
CW combat, was more concerned about a quite old-fashioned celebration of
heroism, courage, and manly =virtu=. It's title says it all. The fact that
the insanity of mass attacks against fortified postions was practiced over and
over again in the Civil War certainly didn't deter the identical idiocy being
practiced at far more horrendous cost during World War I.
