Based on the assumption that a reasonable percentage of people who
would subscribe to a discussion list on the Civil War would also be
interested in the Reconstruction experience, I submit the following.
I'm interested in any information concerning the activities of Hugh
James Campbell. During the war he served with the lst Iowa (enlisted)
and the 18th Iowa (commissioned). Afterwards he was a carpetbagger
in Louisiana. One obituary has him serving as secretary of the New
Orleans city council in 1866; secretary of the state constitutional
convention in 1868; state senator in 1868; and register of the state
land office in 1870. He was also a major in the state militia from
1868 to 1872 and judge of the Fourth Judicial district at New Orleans
in 1875. His membership on the Louisiana returning board "purchased"
an appointment as United States Attorney for Dakota Territory in 1877.
I've been collecting information concerning his territorial career, but
I would welcome any and all assistance regarding the earlier period.
Please reply back channel if at all possible. Thank you in advance.
