The Supreme Court, in Texas v. White (7 Wall. 700 [1869]), ruled that
secession was unconstitutional. "It is difficult to convey the idea of
indissoluble unity more clearly than by these words. What can be
indissouble if a perpetual Union, made more perfect, is not?"
By the way, this is almost certainly contrary to the notion of many of the
Framers, but the Constitution was, in effect, rewritten by the results
of the battlefield, which were ratified by the people politically.
