Note: WASHINGTON HISTORY has been published since 1989, replacing an
earlier title, THE RECORDS OF THE COLUMBIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The
Columbia Historical Society changed its name to the Historical Society of
Washington simultaneously.
In the 11 issues published to date (two issues per year), only one Civil
War-related article has appeared:
Ruffner, Kevin Conley. "Civil War Letters of a Washington Rebel."
WASHINGTON HISTORY, v.4, no. 2, 57-65.
These are letters of Christopher C. Callan, a Confederate soldier born
in Ireland, who lived in Georgetown, Washington, DC. He resigned,
deserted to the Union, and was thrown in Old Capitol Prison. Six of his
letters are published on pp. 66-71. The final letter is written to
President Lincoln from prison. He was released, practiced law in
Washington, later moved to Texas and died in 1886.
Ruffner wrote his dissertation at George Washington University: "Border
State Warriors: Maryland's Junior Officer Corps in the Union and
Confederate Armies," 1991.
