19 Apr 89 JUDAIC STUDIES #12 14 Nisan 49 BS"D Connecting geographically & otherwise disparate groups with a common interest in the study of Judaica. Edited by Y. Greenbaum CONTENTS 1) Wordmill 2) Listserve 3) Hebraica in Europe 1) Wordmill Date: Thu, 13 Apr 89 23:59:59 PDT From: well!ari@lll-winken.llnl.gov (Ari Davidow) Responding to L. Schiffman's letter about laser printing wordmill, I just wanted to note some options. Ron Kiener, who is on this mailist has done a lot of work with the program, and can probably also offer some good pointers. Most importantly, Avrum Goodblatt, working with PalRon in Israel, developed a PC program for typesetting Hebrew and English called Sadarit. This is now being marketed by Pal Ron, and it uses WordMill as the "front end". It therefore seems quite likely that any shop using Sadarit would be able to take WordMill documents and typeset from them with some ease. There are a couple of sites in the New York area (hazarding a guess about the location) that have this program--Mr. Goodblatt should be contacted for more information. I also believe that WordMill will support the HP LaserJet using the available Hebrew font cartridges, but someone will have to confirm that. Also, Yechiel, can you describe what the LISTSERV does and what is available and how to access it? I would be glad to make HUG materials available as part of this, just tell me what you need and etc. Ari Davidow "Jewish" on the WELL--a damn nice example of virtual community ari%well.uucp@lll-crg.llnl.gov | {pacbell, ucbvax, hplabs, apple}!well!ari @ucbvax.berkeley.edu @lll-winken.llnl.gov Yechiel replies- We'll all be happy to have HUG materials available. I'll begin to describe Listserve in the next section. As I learn more, and set up more, I'll describe more. 2) Listserve Listserve is a program which resides in a computer and automatically collects and distributes information. Ours is set up presently so that all incoming messages are passed to the list owner (yours truly) and whatever I send it gets distributed to everyone. The best immediate benefit of being a listserve is the distribution. Not only can anyone subscribe automatically to the newsletter (just send the LISTSERV@TAUNIVM the command SUB JUDAICA followed by your name), but we are listed in the world-wide listing of available listserves (command your local listserv to list global). 3) Hebraica in Europe From: "John Eilts" Date: Mon, 17 Apr 89 10:04:01 PDT The following might be of interest to other recipients of the Judaic Studies Newsletter. I quote the following from the announcement: Colloquium on Hebraica in Europe. 11-13 September 1989 This Colloquium will be the eleventh in a series on area studies, which was initiated by the British Library in London. The purpose of the series is to bring together librarians, scholars and information scientists to share their knowledge, experience and ideas on resources relating to a particular field. This Colloquium is being organized by the School of Oriental and African Studies, the British Library and the Hebraica Libraries Group of Great Britain. Europe was once the cradle of a great Jewish culture whose scholarship was manifest primarily through the medium of Hebrew. She is still fortunate in holding large resources for the study of Hebrew and related literature. In recent years, there have been major advances in the fields of Hebrew Studies and information technology in Israel and America. In the light of these developments, it is of great importance for scholars and, especially, custodians of Hebraica in Europe to take every opportunity to meet together to share their knowledge and discuss the problems facing them in the light of modern technology. It is the purpose of this Colloquium on Hebraica in Europe to present an account of the resources available in libraries in Europe, to increase information relating to these collections, to invite participants to put forward suggestions on their use and exploitation and wherever possible to invite ideas for future co-operation. The Colloquium will cover the following areas: 1. Resources for Hebrew Studies in Europe; 2. Manuscript Codicology and Illumination; 3. Hebrew Bibliography; 4. Automation and Co-operation. Smith, Hebrew Section, The British Library, 14 Store Street, London WC1E 7DG. Yechiel responds- thanks very much for your time and trouble (I imagine that you typed this all in by hand). We'll also be interested in hearing from those who attend. NEXT WEEK- Have a pleasant Passover, and I'll try to send the newsletter a bit later in the week.
