Institute of Contemporary Jewry of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem Summer, 1989 BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CENTER IN CONTEMPORARY JEWRY The Bibliographical Center in Contemporary Jewry is compiling a computerized database of bibliographical information relating to various aspects of 20th century world Jewry. On a VAX-750 computer using the ALEPH information retrieval program, we register indexed and annotated descriptions of books, articles, films, taped interviews and other archival material at or available to the Institute of Contemporary Jewry. These bibliographical records are then accessible for publication as catalogs as well as for online searching via the Hebrew University's communications network. Our aim is to continue the development of this significant reference tool for those throughout the world engaged in the study of contemporary Jewry. ACTIVITIES AT THE BIBLIOGRAPICAL CENTER: The staff of the Bibliographical Center is engaged in the following activities: - designing and supervising the computerization of annotated catalogs of special collections and projects underway at the Institute of Contemporary Jewry, increasing their accessibility through coordinated indexing and registration: - Bibliography in Antisemitism Throughout the Ages - Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive - Oral History Division - Jewish Filmography - Publications of the Institute of Contemporary Jewry and its researchers - Library of Jewish Demography (projected-approved,awaits budget) - Bibliography of Jewish Demography (projected-awaits approval) - America and the Holy Land Studies (projected-awaits approval) - other funded projects approved by the Institute - developing/maintaining an index language and thesaurus of terms in contemporary Jewry for processing and retrieving bibliographical data. - processing, storing and retrieving current bibliographical data in contemporary Jewry. - processing, storing and retrieving retrospective bibliographical data in selective projects, as funding allows. - maintaining the database, improving its efficiency, coordinating its component projects with each other and within the Israeli library network. - supervising maintenance of equipment, both computers and programs, and guidance in their use and application by Institute of Contemporary Jewry researchers: VAX-750 minicomputer; Visual terminals; IBM PC, PC-XT and compatiables; printers; ALEPH info processing program; 3 wordprocessing programs; communications equipment and programs; furnishings appropriate to efficient use. - providing researchers at the Institute with access to databases of information relevant to their work via retrieval from - Contemporary Jewry Database. - Libraries and databases on the university and ALEPH networks. - Other Israeli and foreign databases accessible via our equipment. - assisting researchers in computerizing their research via ALEPH info retreival system.
