Jewish Film Archive Academic Advisor: Yehuda Bauer Director: Marilyn Koolik General Fields: Contemporary Jewry, Films, History of the Yishuv, Zionism Background and Objectives: The Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive was established to locate, collect, catalog, maintain and make available film material on the social, political, cultural and artistic experience of 20th century world Jewry. Over 4,000 cans of film and videos including short clips and full length features are stored in the Archive, a joint project of the Institute of Contemporary Jewry of the Hebrew University and the Department of Information of the World Zionist Organization. Some of the films date as far back as 1911 with new additions of recent productions being made regularly. The Archive attracts researchers from all over the world including broadcasting companies, journalists, movie producers and academicians. In order to make the collection more accessible while allowing for efficient registration, the archive has begun computerization of its holdings through the services of the Bibliographical Center of the Institute of Contemporary Jewry. As a participant in the Contemporary Jewry Database, its entries appear on the ALEPH computer network as well. Each item is provided with detailed content listing, subject indexing and cross referencing. Current Status: - 4,000 items have been indexed in a card catalog in the Archive offices at the Hebrew University. - 1,300 indexed, annotated items have been registered online and are available through the ALEPH network. Future Plans: - Completion of computerized registration of the card catalog. - Continuing online registration of new acquisitions. - Publication of an annotated, indexed Film Archive catalog.
