Tom Costa, Co-Editor, H-Local, Biography


Dr. Costa is presently Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy at Clinch Valley College in Wise, Virginia. He is a 1991 graduate of the College of William and Mary, where he wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on the merchants of colonial Norfolk, Virginia.

Before he entered graduate school, he worked as a research associate at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk.

He has published articles and reviews in the history of Norfolk, Virginia history, and naval and maritime history. His most recent article, published in the JOURNAL OF THE APPALACHIAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION, is titled "Connecting Appalachia: Recent Work in Early American History and its Relevance to Appalachia." In addition to his duties connected with H-Local, he is now researching the early European settlement of southwest Virginia.
