In 1995 H-Pol and the Politics Network of the Social Science History Association began experimenting in a new cooperative venture. H-Pol serves as the Network's electronic outlet for news, condensed articles and reviews, conference reports, session proposals, and Network public business. H-Pol also helps with the Network's membership drives. The Network will continue to print its Newsletter and provide its current services to members.
The Social Science History Association, started in 1976, is an organization
for historians influenced by social science methods and theory and for
social scientists working with historical materials. The association has
grown considerably in the last five years and now has roughly 1,000
members. Scholars from all disciplines are welcome. The annual meeting
offers between 140 and 160 interdisciplinary panels, and
attendance is between 800 and 1,000 persons. SSHA also publishes a
quarterly journal, Social Science History, that
encourages contributions
embracing a wide variety of topics and techniques. Within the Association,
scholars have organized networks around broad subject interests, e.g.
Labor, Demography, and Politics. Networks meet at the annual association
meeting, (usually around in early November), to discuss various topics --
such as current issues in the field, methods, or interesting sources --
and to begin planning sessions for the following year's program. Between the
meeting and the February deadline, the network representative continues to
work with Network members and
other interested persons in developing interesting sessions for the next
program.
The Politics Network is one of the SSHA networks. At present it consists of historians and social scientists (mainly political scientists, but also sociologists), most of whom are interested in U.S. political history, but its mandate covers all related disciplines and the full range of political history. Like other networks, the Politics Network organizes conference sessions and meets at the annual conference. It has also sought to stimulate interest and expand communication among its members by producing a network newsletter. The Network invites anyone interested in political history to join the Association and to affiliate with the Politics Network. H-Pol members are eligible for a 10% discount on their initial membership fee. (Note also the inexpensive rate for graduate students).
