Christ College is the honors college of Valparaiso University, a private, comprehensive Lutheran university and a Phi Beta Kappa institution. The College is a free-standing, interdisciplinary academic unit with ten full-time scholar-teachers who work closely with about 400 talented and motivated students, offering them the benefits of a highly selective liberal arts college. Christ College’s mission is to cultivate the intellectual, moral, and spiritual values of its students. The College is also the home of the prestigious Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts, which hosts postdoctoral teaching fellows for two-year appointments as part of their preparation for careers at church-related colleges or universities in the United States.
As the College prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding in Fall 2017, it seeks a Dean to lead its unique community. Christ College plays a critical role in maintaining the University’s mission to prepare students to lead and serve in both church and society. The next Dean will have the opportunity to collaborate with the faculty to articulate a vision for the College’s future, to innovate within a challenging curriculum, and in particular to play a critical role in the ongoing development of an exceptionally capable faculty. Accomplishing these ends will require a dean with outstanding communication, administrative, and interpersonal skills. As both leader of and model for the educational and scholarly community, the Dean will possess a PhD or equivalent terminal degree and a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with an appointment to the Valparaiso University faculty with tenure. A PhD in a humanities, artistic, or related discipline is preferred. Candidates with a terminal degree outside the humanities should demonstrate a strong commitment to humanities education in word and practice. In addition, the new Dean will demonstrate:
• dedication to undergraduate education in the liberal arts tradition and to interdisciplinary pedagogy and scholarship;
• a commitment to working at a university engaged in issues in Christian higher education in the Lutheran tradition;
• an ability to foster creative innovations in curricular development, intellectual exchange, student recruitment, and fundraising;
• a commitment to promoting and supporting faculty and student scholarship; and
• a commitment to cultural, ideological, and theological diversity and the ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds.
