Assistant Professor of Literature
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | California, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
The Humanities Concentration at Soka University of America invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in the field of Early Modern Literature or the Renaissance. In particular, we encourage applications from scholars whose interdisciplinary capability is enhanced by one of the following emphases: (1) history and theory of dramatic arts (Classical, Renaissance, Shakespeare); (2) creation of scientific knowledge at the threshold of modernity; (3) the Mediterranean as the space of exchange, transmission and inheritance. Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, National Literature, or related Inter-disciplinary Field is required, but ABDs close to completing their dissertation at the time of application may be considered. The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2018.
Consistent with SUA's emphasis on creativity in teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to develop topical courses that combine the candidate's individual strengths with SUA's curriculum stress on the histories of humanism, genealogies of citizenship and the complex modalities of globalization. Every Soka professor teaches at least one course per year in our General Education sequence.
We anticipate that the successful candidate will assume an active role in shaping the Humanities curriculum and culture as SUA expands its distinctive version of the liberal arts pedagogy. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an active research agenda and a compelling teaching record.
Complete applications received by November 27, 2017 will receive full consideration, and applications will be continued to be reviewed until the position is filled.
Benefits and salary: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with rank and experience. All full-time faculty members are eligible for medical, dental, and retirement benefits.
SUA offers a challenging program in liberal arts with a focus on the Pacific Rim, and a strong emphasis on international/intercultural exposure. All undergraduates must complete four semesters of foreign (non-English) language coursework at SUA, and study abroad for one semester during their junior year. The university aims to foster rewarding intellectual relationships among faculty, and between faculty and students through collaboration and mentoring. An appreciation of the centrality of peace, global citizenship, freedom, and human rights is the founding impetus for the university and its mission.
Interested candidates should apply by submitting their application materials through Interfolio. Please submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a one-page teaching statement, evidence of teaching effectiveness, a research statement, a publication sample, three letters of recommendation (sent directly from referees).
