A three-year doctoral studentship is available for candidates who wish to conduct original research into the history of the consumption and control of psychoactive substances and intoxicants in Asia in the first half twentieth century. It is funded by the Wellcome Trust as part of the project with the title ‘The Asian Cocaine Crisis: Pharmaceuticals, consumers and control in Asia, c. 1900-1945’. Professor James Mills of The Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare (CSHHH) Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde is Principal Investigator and will act as first supervisor ( see www.strath.ac.uk/cshhh ). The team is currently working in China, India, Korea and Myanmar so applications are particularly encouraged from those seeking to research in other Asian contexts or within Asian diasporas
The successful candidate will enjoy resources to travel to archives, to project meetings in China, in the USA and in the UK and also to conferences around the world. The student will join the thriving postgraduate community at the CSHHH Glasgow, will be a full member of the Graduate School in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Strathclyde (http://www.strath.ac.uk/humanities/graduateschool/), and will have access to the resources of both the Scottish Graduate School for the Arts and Humanities (http://www.sgsah.ac.uk/) and the Scottish Graduate School for the Social Sciences (http://www.socsciscotland.ac.uk/)
Annual stipend starting at £19,919. Stipend and tuition fees paid for 3 years.
Candidates should have a minimum 2.1 or equivelant undergraduate degree in History or related subject and a Masters in the same.
