The Department of Religious Studies at Case Western Reserve University, in conjunction with the Program in Judaic Studies, invites applicants and nominations for the Abba Hillel Silver Professorship in Jewish Studies. The successful applicant will be appointed as professor or associate professor, as commensurate with experience. Advanced assistant professors who would be eligible for tenure and promotion at the time of appointment are also welcome to apply. Competitive candidates for appointment as associate professor should have a substantial publication record and a national reputation. Competitive candidates for appointment as professor should have achieved an international reputation and continuing accomplishment in the profession including a strong record of scholarly publications. Area of research specialization is open, but should represent a commitment to both academic religious studies and Jewish studies. Ample opportunities for collaborative and interdisciplinary research exist in the department and the university, and participation in the endeavors is encouraged.
The normal teaching load is two courses per semester. Duties include teaching the introduction to Judaic studies; offering a wide array of courses on Jewish religion and thought; contributing to the programs of Religious Studies, including occasionally teaching the introductory course, "Interpreting Religion: Approaches and Current Issues;" programming for Judaic Studies; and eventual directorship of the Judaic Studies Program.
Established in 1964, the Abba Hillel Silver Chair is endowed by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. The search process involves an advisory committee including university faculty and representatives of the Jewish Federation. Final selection is strictly the responsibility of the faculty of the Department of Religious Studies in accordance with the policies of the College of Arts and Sciences and Case Western Reserve University.
