The post
The College of Humanities, University of Exeter, wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Nandini Chatterjee within the project Forms of Law in the Early Modern Persianate World, 17th-19th centuries. This full time post is available from 1st May 2018 to 30th April 2020. The successful applicant will study Persian and bi-lingual legal and administrative documents and other relevant material from one specific linguistic zone from the Indo-Persian world. This zone can be of Rajasthani, Marathi, or Gujarati, or another relevant South Asian language not already covered by the existing team. The broad research aim is to undertake a comparative study of the everyday practices and understandings of law within this cultural sphere, with close attention to language use.
The post will involve archival research in a number of countries, most importantly India, presenting the findings at several workshops and conferences, producing two article-length publications related to this research, assisting the PI in organising project workshops, and contributing to the development of the digital database Asnad.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes within the team and beyond, contribute to the preparation of scientific reports to the funding body, and extend the scope of the project by developing new project proposals and applications.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or be nearing completion or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study, and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work effectively within the project. This will include palaeographic skills in the relevant language and archival research experience and ability.
The starting salary will be from £28,936 per annum within the Grade E band (£26,495 - £33,518) depending on qualifications and experience.
