LGBTQ+ Director
Position Purpose and Functions:
The LGBTQ+ Director is a newly created position at Western Washington University. This is an exciting opportunity to cultivate a welcoming academic, cultural, and social environment for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff and to advance Western’s mission of “...bringing together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university.”
The LGBTQ+ Director will oversee and provide a wide array of services to students, faculty, and staff to increase awareness, critical competencies, and intellectual engagement across campus and with local communities. To develop the LGBTQ+ Office, the Director will work in collaboration with existing student, staff, and faculty organizations and groups. The Director engages in all responsibilities with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
The Director reports to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services, with a consultative relationship with and to the Provost.
Responsibilities:
Administration
- Provide visionary leadership that carries out the mission and goals of the LGBTQ+ Office
- Develop, implement, and evaluate annual goals and objectives for the LGBTQ+ Office and its programs
- Participate in the development of policies and procedures that promote fairness and equity for LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty
- Responsible for developing and monitoring LGBTQ+ Office budget. Has budget authority, works within budget guidelines, and uses organization resources effectively
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student staff
Program Development
- In consultation with multiple stakeholders, establish strong collaborative partnerships, both on and off campus, that address the goals of the university and the LGBTQ+ Office
- Develop and implement social, cultural, and educational programs intended to address the experiences of LGBTQ+ communities
- Manage the collection and evaluation of program data. Prepare reports evaluating program outcomes and effectiveness
Advocacy & Outreach
- Oversee communication and marketing with a goal to increase awareness of topics important to LGBTQ+ communities
- Fulfill public speaking opportunities that further goals and mission of the LGBTQ+ Office
- Outreach to special populations including first year, transfer and graduate students, new faculty, Residence Hall Directors, alumni, and community members and organizations
- Provide assistance, referrals, and resource information to students, staff and faculty related to grievances, alleged discrimination and harassment, campus climate issues, social service referrals, mentorships, and scholarships
Education
- Serve as a resource for faculty on the integration of LGBTQ+ content and inclusive pedagogy in the curriculum
- Develop and implement anti-bias workshops and awareness training programs for student, staff, and faculty organizations and departments.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a discipline such as, but not limited to, Higher Education Administration, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Human Services/Social Work, Political Science, Equity and Diversity in Law, Policy Studies, or related field
- Minimum 5 years experience working in higher education or a related field
- Demonstrated ability to plan, design and implement programs, curricular and co-curricular activities, seminars, trainings, and events
- Demonstrated effectiveness in working with LGBTQ+ communities, including leadership in promoting equity and inclusion, and working effectively with diverse LGBTQ+ populations
- Demonstrated knowledge of current literature and theory relating to anti-oppression work, and strategies for creating inclusive environments
- Demonstrated knowledge of equity and social justice issues facing historically and currently marginalized communities, including examining the intersectionality of identity
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work successfully with a broad range of faculty, staff, students, and community members
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions that align with organizational mission and goals
- Demonstrated fiscal management skills, including experience monitoring budgets
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Professional experience developing higher education policies and procedures, structures, and systems
- Proficiency using social media platforms for outreach, research and/or communication
- Experience working with marginalized communities and interwoven systems of oppression
