Lecturer in Japanese Language and Literature
The Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver Campus) is accepting applications for up to 2 Lecturer positions in Japanese Language and Literature, commencing September 1, 2018.
These are full-time positions for a term of up to three years, which entails a probationary first year. Lecturer positions are appointments without review (i.e. non-tenure track), renewable for successive terms, subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association. The workload for these positions includes teaching plus service. Courses may include a combination of Japanese language courses and either 1) literature courses taught in Japanese or 2) content courses on Japanese literature or culture taught in English. We seek candidates with expertise in teaching modern Japanese language, as well as modern Japanese literature or content courses related to Japan (taught in English) to both major/minors and other students. We seek exceptional teachers with a track record of employing innovative pedagogies, such as online teaching and distance learning, community-based learning, and curriculum/program design.
A full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts is responsible for 24 teaching credits (i.e., eight 3-credit courses) and service assignments, based on a 3-3 load in the Winter sessions and 2 courses in the Summer sessions.
Successful candidates must have native or near-native fluency in both English and Japanese; a Master’s degree in Japanese Language, Japanese Literature, Asian Studies (concentration: Japanese Studies), or a closely related field; evidence of excellent teaching ability in courses including Japanese language, Japanese literature in translation and Japanese Popular culture at the post-secondary level in North America; a strong track record of full participation in team work and program affairs; experience in computer-assisted teaching, teaching online courses or developing online course material for literature courses; evidence of training in and understanding of higher education theories, including community-based learning, student-centred learning, task-based instruction, and curriculum development. Individuals with the expertise to teach modern Japanese literature, as well as translation theory, English-to-Japanese translation, and Japanese-to-English translation are particularly encouraged to apply. Teaching expertise in film studies, performing arts, or popular culture will also be assets for the position. The successful candidates will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching, active engagement in professional development and team-based curriculum design/development of teaching materials, perform instructional responsibilities in coordination with other instructors in parallel sections and other levels, as well as fully participate in program affairs and service.
Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. These positions are subject to final budgetary approval.
