Pierre Yves Saunier <pierreyvessaunier@gmail.com> Université Laval, Departement d'histoire The urban side of my research interests addresses the transnational history of municipal government,in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a special focus on city planning or housing. This has led me to reconstruct the activities cross national networks of municipal governments as well as intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental programmes in these spheres. In my good days, I see this as a contribution to historicize what we call 'globalization'. This is the point we have tried to make with Shane Ewen in a recent collection of essays (Another Global City. Historical Explorations Into The Transnational Municipal Moment 1850-2000). Besides, I have paid a substantial interest to the history of US philanthropic foundations, and for a couple of years I have been re-orienting my research towards the history of international organizations, with an emphasis on the relations betwen different types and generations of international organizations(including IGOs, philanthropic foundations and INGOs). This includes a special investigation of the 'worlds of nursing', that is the style and substance of conversations about nursing and among nurses from about 1850 to 1950, with a focus on the North Atlantic region but forays into Latin America and Asia. |
