Joyce Blackwell-Johnson <johnsonj@meredith.edu> Meredith College I recently completed research on African-American peace activists in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. In this study, I employ a race and gender analysis to determine the roles played by black women in the peace movement. I am currently working on a project entitled, Race and Class in 'Hickstown': A Study of Self-Empowerment in a Durham, North Carolina Community, 1867-1985". This study examines how an impoverished community successfuly engages in grassroots activism against state government. The residents of the community are given the opportunity to tell their stories. I plan to write a biography of Erna P. Harris, and African-American peace activist in Cold War America. |
