Bio: Steven Fine specializes in Jewish history during late antiquity, focusing upon interrelationships between Rabbinic literature and archaeology. Dr. Fine is the author of -This Holy Place: On the Sanctity of the Synagogue During the Greco-Roman Period- (1997). His -Sacred Realm: The Emergence of the Synagogue in the Ancient World- (1996) was awarded the Philip Johnson Award for Excellence in Published Exhibition Catalogues of the Society of Architectural Historians. -Jews, Christians and Polytheists in the Ancient Synagogue: Cultural Interaction During the Greco-Roman Period- (1999) was the finalist for the Charles H. Revson Foundation Award in Jewish-Christian Relations of National Jewish Book Council. -A Crown for a King: Studies in Memory of Prof. Stephen S. Kayser-, edited with W. Kramer and S. Sabar (Magnes Museum and Gefen), appeared in 2000 and -Liturgy in the Life of the Synagogue-, a volume edited with R. Langer, appeared in 2005. Steven Fine is co-author of -Where God Dwells: A Child’s History of the Synagogue- (with L. B. Fine, 1999) and was founding editor of -AJS Perspectives: The Newsletter of the Association for Jewish Studies-. Dr. Fine is author of -Art and Judaism During the Greco-Roman Period: Toward a New Jewish Archaeeology (Cambridge, 2005), and an editor of the new journal, -Images: A Journal of Jewish Art and Vusual Culture (EJ Brill). Steven Fine is Professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University in New York, head of the department of Jewish History at Yeshiva College, and director of Yeshiva University’s Center for Israel Studies. |
