Bio: James Farrer Bio James Farrer is Professor of Sociology and Global Studies at Sophia University in Tokyo. His specialties are urban studies and cultural sociology. He has used qualitative sociological research methods to investigate urban culture in Shanghai and Tokyo, including sexuality, cuisine, nightlife, and expatriate communities. His recent research projects have focused on the lives of expatriates in Shanghai, including their work lives, sexuality, marriage, family, childrearing and urban place-making. Publications on sexual culture in China and Japan have covered changing gender roles and sexual relations, including youth sexuality and dating culture, extramarital sexuality, cross-border relationships, online dating, internet sexual politics, sexual storytelling, gay identities, and other aspects of sex and gender in social interaction. He also studies the globalization of urban restaurant scenes in Shanghai and Tokyo. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in Cognitive Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. |
